Four parts.
One clear picture.
Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older, and some younger people with disabilities. It has different parts that cover different types of healthcare services — here's the map.
Hospital
Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing, and hospice care.
Medical
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and medical equipment.
Medicare Advantage
The all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare.
Prescription
Prescription drug coverage for the medications you take.
Medicare Advantage vs.
Medicare Supplement
Both paths can work beautifully — for the right person. The difference comes down to networks, premiums, and how you like to use your coverage.
Medicare Advantage
- ✓ Replaces Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
- ✓ Often includes prescription drug coverage
- ✓ May include dental, vision & hearing aids
- ✓ Typically lower monthly premiums
- ✓ Provider networks and prior authorizations
Medicare Supplement
- ✓ Works alongside Original Medicare
- ✓ Helps pay Medicare deductibles & coinsurance
- ✓ No provider networks — see any Medicare doctor
- ✓ Guaranteed renewable
- ✓ Separate Part D needed for prescriptions
Not sure which path fits your doctors, medications, and budget? That's exactly what a free Medicare review is for — we compare plans from multiple carriers, side by side, with no obligation to purchase. Want the fundamentals first? Start with our Medicare education guide.
Miss a window,
and it can cost you.
Medicare runs on a calendar. These are the three enrollment windows everyone should have circled.
Initial Enrollment Period
3 months before to 3 months after your 65th birthday — your first chance to enroll in Medicare.
Annual Open Enrollment
Each year, you can switch, drop, or join Medicare Advantage and Part D plans for the year ahead.
Your plan’s fall letter tells you what is changing: what to check in your ANOC and what to do if your plan is ending.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
For Medicare Advantage plan members — a window to change plans or return to Original Medicare.
A Medicare guide in your corner — at no cost to you.

If Medicare’s costs are a strain, check whether you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program before choosing a plan. These state programs can cover your Part B premium — and qualifying automatically gets you Extra Help with prescription costs, which changes which plan is actually cheapest for you.
Gaps the main plan leaves.
Help paying your premium
Medicare Savings Programs pay some or all of your Medicare premiums, and QMB covers deductibles and copays too. You can apply any time — no enrollment window. See also Extra Help for prescription costs.
Hospital indemnity
Pays you cash for each day you are admitted. Built for the per-day inpatient copays most Advantage plans charge — and much less useful if you already have Medigap.
Dental, vision & hearing
Original Medicare covers almost none of it, which is why these are sold separately.
Critical illness & accident
Lump-sum cash on a serious diagnosis, or set amounts for an injury. Both pay you rather than the provider.
Final expense
A small permanent policy sized to cover a funeral and the bills that follow it.
