Short answer: Your window is 7 months around your 65th birthday — enroll in the first 3 months. And know Washington's advantage: once you have a Medigap plan B through N, WA lets you switch to another B-through-N plan any time, without health questions, so your Supplement rate is never a life sentence.

This one's personal — Washington is our home state. iCoach Solutions is headquartered in Tacoma, and most of our team lives and works right here in the South Sound. Here's the turning-65 playbook for Washingtonians.

Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period

The window: 3 months before your birthday month, the month itself, and 3 months after. Enroll early for coverage that starts the first of your birthday month. Miss it without creditable coverage and the Part B penalty (10% per year, for life) and Part D penalty apply.

Medigap plans in Washington State: the switch rule

In most states, once your Medigap enrollment window passes, switching Supplement plans means health underwriting — and a possible decline if your health has changed. Washington law works differently. The state's Office of the Insurance Commissioner puts it plainly: if you already have a Medigap plan B through N, you can switch at any time to another plan B through N, and if you have Plan A, you can switch to another Plan A. Either way, you do not take a written health screening questionnaire. Practically, that means when your carrier raises rates, you can shop, a lever most of the country doesn't have.

Three details to know before you shop:

  • Plans C and F are closed to newer enrollees. If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, Washington's switch law lists Plans B, D, G (including high-deductible G), K, L, M and N for you (RCW 48.66.045).
  • Coming from other coverage is different. Moving to Medigap from an employer plan or Medicare Advantage, the Commissioner says rules vary and an insurer may require the health questionnaire, unless you have a guaranteed-issue right. Ask before you cancel anything.
  • Keep the old plan until the new one sticks. Medicare gives you a 30-day free look at a new Medigap policy; Medicare.gov says to keep the first one until you have decided to keep the second, and you pay both premiums for the month you have both.

How Medigap prices are set in Washington

Washington requires every Medigap insurer to set rates on a community-rated basis (RCW 48.66.045). Everyone with the same plan from the same insurer pays the same premium, whatever their age or health; the only differences allowed are discounts for spouses or for how you pay, and a separate rate pool for people on Medicare because of a disability. So your premium does not climb because you had a birthday. It moves when the insurer raises the rate for everyone on that plan, and that is exactly when the switch rule pays off.

Because Medigap plans are standardized, a Plan G pays the same benefits whichever company sells it, so the comparison comes down to price, the company's rate history and service. The Commissioner publishes the full list of approved Medigap plans and their monthly premiums, by company. We do not offer every plan on that list, and we will tell you which ones we do.

Advantage vs. Original + Supplement in Washington

From Seattle and Tacoma to Spokane, Washington's Advantage plans are competitive — but network fit matters across our hospital systems (MultiCare, Virginia Mason Franciscan, UW Medicine, Providence). Original Medicare + a Supplement opens nearly every door, and thanks to the switch rule, your Supplement choice stays flexible.

Already on Medicare? Your yearly chance to change Medicare Advantage and Part D plans is open enrollment, October 15 to December 7. Medigap switches in Washington are not tied to that window. For a second look at your 2027 options, book a free plan review with our Tacoma-based team.

Common questions

Frequently asked

When can I enroll in Medicare in Washington?

Your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months: the 3 months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month, and the 3 months after. Enroll in the first 3 months so coverage starts the month you turn 65. Missing it without other creditable coverage can mean lifelong Part B and Part D penalties.

Can I switch Medigap plans in Washington?

Yes. Washington's Insurance Commissioner says that if you already have a Medigap plan B through N, you can switch at any time to another plan B through N, and if you have Plan A you can switch to another Plan A, without a written health screening questionnaire. Washington also requires community rating, so everyone with the same plan from the same insurer pays the same premium whatever their age. That means you can shop your Medigap rate whenever it rises, an option most states don't offer. Keep your old plan until the new one has been in place for its 30-day free look.

Where can I get free Medicare help in Washington?

Two free resources: iCoach Solutions — we're headquartered in Tacoma with several licensed agents across the state, comparing plans across many carriers at no cost — and SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors), Washington's free counseling program.

Does Washington have its own health insurance exchange?

Yes — for under-65 coverage, Washington runs its own exchange, Washington Healthplanfinder. We help you compare Marketplace plans and subsidies at no cost.
